As part of the implementation of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, the BDS Library has designed a learning pathway entitled Information Literacy Sessions, aimed at students in the final two years of Middle & Senior School.
The goal of these sessions was to enable Senior 4 students, who already have extensive experience as library users, to focus on developing information literacy skills and competencies related to the research process, which are essential for the different components of the IB Diploma Programme.
These activities, coordinated by our librarian Silvina Sala, featured the participation of information resource specialists who enriched the programme with their expertise. Together with representatives from Wikimedia Argentina, Encyclopædia Britannica, and the American Psychological Association, students explored a wide range of concepts that encouraged them to rethink their role not only as consumers of information but also as producers of knowledge—an essential competency in today’s world.
Throughout the sessions, students explored topics such as library service models, identifying and evaluating sources based on their credibility and relevance, opportunities for collaborative knowledge creation, the use of artificial intelligence tools, guidelines for initiating a research process, and access to available resources, among others.
This first stage of the programme included five sessions that laid the foundation for continuing to strengthen information literacy through a critical, ethical, and reflective approach, aligned with the principles of the IB and the educational philosophy of Belgrano Day School.
