Century: Artificial Intelligence applied to learning in primary education

As part of its institutional commitment to educational innovation, Belgrano Day School continues to implement artificial intelligence tools with concrete pedagogical purposes. One of the outstanding implementations in Primary is Century, an international educational platform that combines AI, neuroscience, and pedagogy to personalize mathematics learning in English.

What is Century and why do we use it?

Century is a platform that uses AI algorithms to create personalized learning pathways based on each student’s performance. Unlike other platforms based on fixed sequences, this program “learns” through use, continuously adjusting content and challenges according to the student’s progress.

In addition, it provides teachers with very useful and clear assessment tools regarding students’ performance. This information is then used throughout the year to intentionally implement and lead this project in the classroom.

This approach allows students to strengthen not only their mathematical knowledge and the use of vocabulary in the English subject area, but also key 21st-century skills such as autonomy, critical thinking, and the ability to learn how to learn, fundamental pillars of the Belgrano Day School educational model.

Objectives

From its pilot phase in 2022 to its full implementation in 2023 and 2024, Century has become part of the Primary annual plan. Its implementation has multiple purposes:

  • Incorporate AI to improve Mathematics teaching.
  • Strengthen mathematical vocabulary in English, in line with the school’s bilingual approach and the Cambridge curriculum in Primary.
  • Encourage teachers to make data-driven decisions.
  • Use accurate, real-time information to adjust teaching strategies, with intuitive dashboards that show students’ individual progress and performance.
  • Redefine the role of the teacher as a guide and learning facilitator in an AI-mediated environment.
  • Promote metacognition among students, that is, reflection on their own learning process by analyzing their strengths and weaknesses based on the percentages obtained.

The implementation of Century is a concrete example of Belgrano Day School’s ongoing educational innovation. This year, the school reached a key milestone with the launch of its Safe and Responsible Artificial Intelligence Use Policy. This policy promotes an ethical, educational, and critical approach to AI, as part of a humanistic and innovative education.

To learn more about its implementation, we share the testimony of the teachers in charge.
