One of the Belgrano Day School’s most cherished and iconic traditions once again lit up our auditorium. Over the course of three months of dedicated work, a group of Kindergarten mothers and members of the wider school community generously donated their time, energy, and talent to bring a new edition of Mad Mothers to life. The result was four unforgettable performances of the play Once Upon a Time.
Three Months of Dedication Behind the Scenes
Since March, the Mad Mothers team has been responsible for every aspect of the production. They rehearsed the choreography, selected the music, handcrafted every costume, and designed the set that transformed the stage into an enchanted forest watched over by a queen and a witch.
All of this creative work was coordinated by Alicia Vallcaneras, who has led the initiative with remarkable dedication for many years and personally writes each of the adapted scripts for our youngest students.
Laughter at School and an Impact Beyond Our Community
As is tradition at BDS, the performances had a dual purpose. The first two shows were dedicated to our Kindergarten and Primary students. For the youngest children, the experience had a particularly magical touch: the auditorium was filled with laughter, applause, and delighted expressions of surprise as they recognized their own mothers fully transformed into the characters on stage.
The remaining two performances served a social purpose that makes us especially proud. The school opened its doors to welcome more than 400 children from community kindergartens, municipal schools, children’s homes, and healthcare organizations. Among the institutions that joined us were Santa Ana Community Kindergarten, Colmenita Kindergarten, Municipal Kindergarten No. 8, Madre Teresa School, Familias de Esperanza Children’s Home, COR Foundation, Portal de Belén Children’s Home, and Ronald McDonald House.
The Gift of Creating Moments of Joy
For many of these organizations, the invitation to Mad Mothers is a truly valued opportunity. The main goal of the BDS families is to offer a high-quality, entertaining performance for children who often do not have regular access to this type of artistic production, or who are facing challenging circumstances. The day concluded with the distribution of sweets and donations that our school families had collected and prepared especially for them.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to every mother who, year after year, chooses to dedicate her time and heart to this initiative. As it approaches its fourth decade of history, Mad Mothers continues to demonstrate that when a community comes together with generosity, the arts become the most powerful way to connect different realities and bring joy to others.
